Physician Anesthesiologist-Intensivist
About
I am currently a Tenured Professor and the Chair for the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix. I am also a Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve, serving as the Mobilization Assistant to the Commander, 711th Human Performance Wing, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, OH.
My primary research interest concerns aeromedical critical care. My mission is to coordinate, develop, and lead efforts to expand the science of aeromedical critical care, combining a global perspective with regional applications, by cultivating a a versatile and robust research methodology. I have secondary interests in advanced critical care life support modalities, clinical monitoring, education, and patient safety.
I am a practicing intensivist and anesthesiologist. I truly enjoy teaching at all levels, from undergraduate EMT students to residents, fellows, and SRNAs.
I began my journey in medicine as a lifeguard and ski patroller, gradually gaining more experience as an EMT and paramedic. I graduated from the NYIT/New York College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM) in 2000. Following an internship at St Clare’s/St Vincent’s Hospital in New York City, I served as a general medical officer and flight surgeon in the United States Air Force. I then completed residency at the Brigham and Woman’s Hospital / Harvard Medical School, followed by two fellowships in critical care and research at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. I earned my PhD in Clinical Investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Medicine in 2012.
Outside of medicine, my family always come first, but with whatever time I have left, I love flying planes, triathlons, shooting, skiing, welding, reading, and building things!
